One of the most critical ways that home care agencies can add value to the rest of the care continuum is by reducing the number of clients that are readmitted to hospitals. Home care is an ideal setting to focus on reducing readmissions because of its ability to proactively address factors across all parts of a senior’s life that could lead to an issue requiring readmission.

Today OSHA announced the Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission in the workplace. The ETS establishes binding requirements to protect employees of large employers (100 or more employees) from the risk of contracting COVID-19 in the workplace.
HCAOA announced this week that Greg Gorton of Right at Home in Grand Blanc, Michigan is the 2021 Caregiver of the Year. Gorton was selected as the top home caregiver in the country from nearly 250 nominees from 41 states. Gorton will be recognized Wednesday at a special event at the Michigan State Capitol.
Last week, the HCAOA Washington Chapter joined with six other long-term care advocacy groups to send a joint letter to the state’s Joint Legislative Unanticipated Revenue Oversight Committee to request an extension of COVID-19 emergency add-ons for Medicaid clients in skilled nursing facilities, assisted living centers, adult family homes, in-home care, private duty nursing, and supported living centers.
Last month, the HCAOA California Chapter held a meeting focused on the state's vaccine mandate for home care workers and issues with the Guardian System. HCAOA compiled members’ questions and speakers Jennifer Nicklas, DSS Home Care Services Bureau Chief, and Atty. Elizabeth Murphy, JacksonLewis, agreed to provide answers as a follow up. Last week, President Biden announced that a compromise was reached for the framework for his “Build Back Better Plan.” Sadly, the Credit for Caring Act, which would have provided a tax credit to families caring for loved ones at home, was not included as the White House and Democratic Leadership were forced to trim more than $1.5 billion from the plan. The provision was included in the House Ways & Means Committee plan passed by the Committee in early September.

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially expanded the application of COVID-19 boosters to those who originally got the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine and said that anyone eligible for an extra dose can receive a booster shot from a brand different from their initial dose. HCAOA continues to fight against California’s AB 2455 law that requires all home care aides’ personal information, including their home addresses and phone numbers, to be turned over to SEIU to assist with union organizing. HCAOA initially filed the lawsuit in 2019 but the lower court upheld the law, so HCAOA filed an appeal from that decision.
