During yesterday’s meeting with Veteran’s Administration officials, HCAOA’s VA Services Council was informed that authorizations for community care issued after July 16 will be good for 365 days – an extension from the previous 180 day Standardized Episode of Care (SEOC) duration.

Yesterday, June 22 Governor Whitmer lifted nearly all COVID related orders in Michigan. Capacity in both indoor and outdoor settings increased to 100% and the state will no longer require residents to wear a face mask. read more HCAOA’s newest Associate Member, CareVoyant for Home Care, is an integrated, cloud-based software platform for home health care agencies offering multiple services under one patient and one employee making it a Single System of Record. This week, the Better Medicare Alliance announced Mary Beth Donahue as the next President and CEO of the organization. Donahue previously served in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, serving as Chief of Staff to HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala during the critical early days of Medicare Advantage as “Medicare+Choice.” On Wednesday, June 9, the 2021 regular legislative session of the General Assembly adjourned, shortly after lawmakers adopted a two-year $46.3 billion state budget and annual capital program. Less than a week later, lawmakers reconvened for a special session to implement the budget and legalize the use of marijuana. The HCAOA Washington Chapter/WAHCA is starting to plan for the next Blooming with the Boomers conference in the Spring of 2022. All Florida agencies are invited to attend an in-person Chapter meeting on Thursday, August 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Orlando. This jam-packed meeting agenda features presentations by a variety of top officials from both the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Chair of the Florida House Health & Human Services Committee. There will also be ample opportunities for members to network and hear updates about HCAOA advocacy and membership news. On June 14 Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the Pandemic Liability Protection Act into law, which became effective upon his signing. This new law provides COVID-19 liability protections for health care providers, businesses, non-profits, religious institutions and schools that follow certain safety protocols. Texas, with the adoption of this law, joined dozens of other states across the country that have enacted statutory liability protections for businesses and other organizations for claims arising during a pandemic or disaster related to a pandemic. read more The three largest expenses for the home care industry are payroll, employee benefits and workers’ compensation. While agencies can control and plan for payroll expenses, workers’ compensation costs can fluctuate without much warning. And how has COVID impacted the insurance marketplace? HCAOA Associate Member Gavin Studner, Sales Executive, Odell Studner Insurance Brokers & Consultants, recently released a white paper addressing these issues and the current state of the insurance marketplace specifically for home care. Last week, the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging hosted a virtual hearing “21st Century Caregiving: Supporting Workers, Family Caregivers, Seniors and People with Disabilities.” The hearing featured four testimonies from frontline caregivers and those who have received personal care. One of the top issues facing the home care industry is the growing demand for home care services. For example, 3.5 million people currently receive home and community-based services through the Medicaid program, and by the year 2050 the 65+ population will double. The Michigan In Home Care PAC recently met with key legislators on both sides of the aisle and handed out more than $5,000 in donations to support good public policy surrounding the home care industry. Legislators came to the offices of HCAOA Michigan’s lobby team at McAlvey Merchant & Associates and learned about the industry. HCAOA members who contributed to the PAC this cycle joined the meetings via Zoom so legislators could make the connection directly to members. The effort was a success. As a result of the Governor signing Executive Order N-08-21, rescinding certain provisions of COVID-19-related Executive Orders, the Department of Social Services has released two PINs that will be in effect until September 30, 2021. HCAOA's VA Advisory Committee is working to help members address issues with the VA and recently put out a call for members to voice concerns. As a follow up, we have scheduled meetings with TriWest and Optum, as well as follow up meeting with VA. HCAOA members are invited to join representatives from TriWest and Optum for webinars to cover all topics pertaining to home care agencies serving veterans. |
